Structural layers, often a middle layer like nylon or a metallized film, add puncture resistance and stiffness. Products with sharp edges, like certain grains or dry fruit pieces, need this structural protection more than a smooth powder does.

Different products stress a pouch in different ways, so the right film structure changes with what is being packed. A moisture sensitive powder like masala or turmeric needs strong barrier properties above almost everything else. A sharp edged product like biscuits or dry fruit needs puncture resistance more than barrier performance. A reactive product, similar to camphor, needs a film that resists both moisture ingress and sublimation loss, which is a narrower category of material than most manufacturers initially assume.
